In-Process

I'll probably be taking you through a lot of in-process work these last two weeks of the quarter since I will be making a lot. I have all 432- 8 yard warps made and on the loom and I am slowly winding them onto the back beam so I can thread each one individually through the 432 hooks, hopefully tomorrow! Heres what some of the process is like...

Using this warping board I wind the thread around the pegs, which are a yard apart. My warp is 8 yards long, which is what is shown below. Only about 108 warps can fit on the board, so I had to make four separate bundles of warps.
Here are the colors I will be using. The slate grey is the warp, the vertical threads, the natural white will be the weft or horizontal threads, and the peach is a tabby thread, which will mostly be underneath the white to make the base cloth, but will show through across the whole blanket, hopefully! I've already gone through almost 3 pounds of the grey yarn making the warps. 3 pounds of yarn more and I will have a blanket!
Heres what 432-8 yard warps look like before they get onto the loom. Somehow they are all threaded through in the correct order!
My warp is as wide as the loom, a step up from the samplers we have been doing prior. This project is really our first project, but how cool that we have so much knowledge now in only 8 weeks and I'm able to weave my very own 60x75 inch throw blanket!
Cant wait to see it done.... just a few more hours to go, right?

Linocut

Here is the beginning stage of what will become my last length of screen printed fabric for this quarter. We started by carving a linocut block, printing it, and now I have to edit it to make it repeat and get it onto the screen. Hopefully some time this week I'll have the lengths ready to show, plus my loom threaded with its 432 8 yard warps and my throw started! Busy week ahead...
P.S. what do you think about the circles? I printed them first all black but that seems too heavy, so i tried out four other options? Do you like one specific one the best? Think it would look cool using more than one, all four, two of them? Let me know what you think!

Presents

The UPS man delivered blanket making yarns to my doorstep today. My yarns are actually buried under my classmates, but none the less these yarns will turn into blankets! (if only it was that easy) Either way, I have two weeks to make a 60x75 inch throw blanket, in addition to other projects, but it will get done!

3 weeks left!

Somehow there are only three weeks left in the quarter. That means busy from here on out. Today was spent screen printing a random all-over print using doilies I bought in Paris at the antique market and weaving some more samples, this time houndstooth. 23 more weeks of college left! Crazy.
By the way, I'm seeing MuteMath tonight! Theyre coming to SCAD, and I snatched some second row tickets when they first went on sale, so expect some pictures!

Math talk

WARP
Step 1--> 150+40+15+15+24=244/36=6.78-->7 yards
Step 2--> 30+2+3=35x12=420+4=424 warp ends
Step 3--> 7x424=2968 yards for warp

WEFT
33x12=396x180=71280/36= 1980 yards for weft

Thats what a 60x75 inch throw blanket looks like in math terms. I am going to be making a handwoven cotton flake blanket exactly how I want it. I ordered my materials this afternoon from Yarn Barn, and as soon as they get here I can start! Its going to be an enjoyable process (I hope) after I thread 424- 7 yard threads through the loom!

Also, check out these amazing handwoven throws from Swans Island, if only I could afford them, theyre beautiful!

Happy Valentines Day

My Valentine is in NYC, but I received these on my porch this morning...
And then I spent most of the day screen printing two yards of this...
And it ended with breakfast for dinner with good girl friends.

And so it begins...

Some work is done, but still lots to do! Fibers is having an open studio tomorrow night, I will be screen printing during it and some of the cards I have been making are hanging up. I realized that the job hunt/that part of life is starting... today! Excited and nervous at the same time...

Nuno

I made this nuno felt piece sophomore year and am submitting it to a call for entry. I took pictures of it today, so I thought I would share.

Destiny

I spent the afternoon threading my loom for our second project. We will be experimenting with six different weave structures. Each person threaded their loom for a specific structure and we will move around to each loom to weave a sample of each. My loom is threaded for New Canaan Check which I cant find anywhere online, but one variation is a waffle weave, might look something like this...

Doris says that a threaded loom is a metaphor for destiny. The loom is waiting to be woven and it will take hard work, dedication, patience, and time to complete. Weaving is a lot like life... each warp you weave is an event, a lesson learned, a mistake-- but you meet your goal and cut it off the loom to begin what is next. Just a thought. Heres a look at destiny...

Here we go...

No lie, I am working 45 hours in 3 days this weekend. Starting at 6 am Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and working event after event until 10 pm or 1 am. Lets just say the credit card will be paid off, and I will be exhausted (if I make it). Plus, half-way done the quarter and still LOTS to do and make!! Heres to the next five weeks, wish me luck!

cafe s'il vous plait

I was just thinking of what I miss from Europe. Then I thought it would be fun to find the pictures I have of all the great coffee I drank. Then I realized I drank a lot of coffee in Europe. And then I missed it even more. Plus, this weekend is going to be so busy, and full of coffee that just doesnt compare to these...
And I kinda miss this too...
But just kinda. (or every day)

Slide Sideways

Slide Sideways is the creative studio of Scott Scoggin and Jacqui Savinsky. Both worked as graphic designers after school but missed making with their hands. They came together to collaborate in making prints, commissioned work, identity, typography, illustration, packaging, and more. You can see what they are making and selling on their Etsy, what they are blogging about, and visit their website. Enjoy!
